What to Wear on a Disney Cruise: Part 3

I previously covered  cruise casual and formal wear and then semi-formal and themed nights.  Today I\’m going to cover adult only venues and what to wear during the day time!

Every Disney ship has at least one adults only dining venue–the beautiful Italian-themed Palo. On the Dream class ships (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy), there is an additional adult restaurant, Remy. Remy is even more upscale with a French feel!

What is the dress code at Palo?

Disney Cruise Line set the following guidelines for dining at Palo:

Men: Dress pants and dress shirt (tie and jacket are optional)

Women: Dress, skirt and blouse or nice pantsuit

Additionally, no jeans, capris, flip-flops, or tennis shoes are allowed. The dress code is more enforced here, but it is still at the discretion of the host or hostess at the front desk. Generally, the dress code is more relaxed for brunch where you\’ll see women wearing summer dresses with nice sandals and men wearing slacks or even khakis with button down shirts (unbuttoned at the collar).  At dinner, you\’re much more likely to see women in dresses with heels and men wearing dress pants and shirts many with ties. They will turn you away if you show up in jeans or yoga pants regardless of how nice they are!

What is the dress code at Remy?

Disney Cruise Line set these guidelines for dining at Remy:

Men: Dress pants with jacket (sports jacket) or suit (tie is optional)

Women: Dress, cocktail dress, pantsuit or nice skirt/blouse is required

Again, no jeans, capris, flip-flops, or tennis shoes are allowed.

You really do have to dress up at Remy. Men without jackets will be turned away as will anyone wearing jeans or any type of capris!

Both Palo and Remy are optional. They both carry an additional charge as well. If dressing up does not appeal to you, simply don\’t make reservations to eat there! There are other areas where you can eat in a more casual atmosphere!

Now I know what to wear for dinner, but what do I wear during the day?

Very casual around the ship

This is a great question, and the answer is…it depends! It partly depends on where you\’re cruising; you\’ll plan differently for Alaska than you will for the Caribbean. It also depends on how you plan to spend your days. Will you be lounging by the pool or inside playing Bingo? Sipping drinks poolside or watching a movie on the big screen? Whatever you choose, even your most casual comfortable clothes are fine!

What do I wear at Castaway Cay?

Swimsuits with cover ups are perfect for Castaway Cay!

Whatever you want! Most guests will disembark the ship wearing their swimsuits with a cover up (for the women). Many will wear rashguards or swim shirts for extra sun protection. Make sure you wear and take sunscreen!

If you\’re planning to run the Castaway Cay 5K, you\’ll want tennis shoes and running gear. If you\’re not planning to get in the water, wear shorts or other casual clothes! A hat is also a good idea. You\’ll definitely want sandals, flip flops or water shoes–the pavement can get very hot!

Post-Castaway Cay 5-K!

What do I need to wear during the day in the Bahamas or the Caribbean?

Touring some Mayan ruins in Mexico.

Generally speaking, if you\’re headed to a tropical destination like the Caribbean or the Bahamas, plan for warm weather! Pack swimsuits and cover ups for lounging by the pool, pack shorts and t-shirts (or capris or very casual skirts) and comfortable clothes with your flip-flops or tennis shoes for watching movies, playing Bingo and trivia, or participating in the activities around the ship. Everyone will be dressed casually during the day.

Don\’t forget to pack appropriately for any Port Adventures you might have. Snorkeling in Nassau might mean an extra swimsuit with cover up or a sun shirt and a hat. A sight-seeing tour might necessitate good walking shoes and a hat.

I\’m headed to Alaska! What do I wear during the day?

For Alaska or northern European ports, you\’ll want warmer but casual clothes. Jeans, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, casual shoes and tennis shoes will be much more common.Whale watching in Alaska means you\’ll want jeans or casual pants, sweater, and a jacket; maybe add a hat! Hiking boots and a rain jacket are also good to have.

You may want one swimsuit for Alaska. Pools are heated as are the hot tubs, of course! If you\’re not really a pool person, you can easily leave your swimsuit at home!

What about a cruise to the Mediterranean? What do I wear?

On the ship during the day, wear whatever is comfortable. Temperatures are generally warm, so pack those swimsuits and shorts! If you plan to hit beaches during your port days, then swimsuits with good cover ups, sunscreen, etc. are absolutely appropriate. If, however, you are doing a city tour or just shopping and sight-seeing on your own, you\’ll want something smart casual! Americans easily stand out in athletic wear and tennis shoes; to blend in more, wear clothes without American labels and opt for casual shoes rather than tennis shoes.

Churches and other places of worship often have dress codes in Europe. If you plan to visit any churches or cathedrals, please note that shoulders and knees must be covered at all times while inside. That means capris, pants or longer skirts for women and casual pants for men. If you wear tank tops or shirts with small straps, also bring a sweater to throw on before you enter.

Keep in mind that most European cities are very old with old uneven streets! Flip-flops or shoes with heels will not be the best options!

Laundry room are available on all Disney ships

Uh, oh…I\’m out of clean socks! Now what?

You\’re in luck! Every Disney ship has self-service laundry rooms! The Classic Ships (Magic and Wonder) have three on three different decks. The Dream Class ships (Dream and Fantasy) have seven laundry rooms on seven different decks! And they\’re open 24 hours a day! You do have to pay to use them, but your room key serves as your payment (no coins required). Price is currently $2 to wash and $2 to dry.  Additionally, there is a dry cleaning service onboard that has a turnaround time of about 24 hours. Pressing service is also available.

Do you have any other tips?

Dining rooms and theaters can be cool. If you tend to be chilly inside, bring a lightweight sweater. Minimize the number of pairs of shoes you take! Women, in particular, tend to bring more than they need! Also, don\’t forget that you\’ll be on a ship that moves! Really high heels may not be the best choice especially if you don\’t wear them every day!

Don\’t forget your sunglasses and sun hat if you\’re sensitive to the sun!

Don\’t feel like you have to pack seven different outfits for dinner either! If you\’re only wearing them to dinner, have your kids wear the same pair of khaki pants twice or pack two blouses to go with those black pants. No one will notice!

Finally, check what your Port Adventures might require. Do you need closed-toe shoes? Hiking boots? Skirts that will cover your knees?

Don\’t overpack and have fun!
